TIP

"Shine a Torch in the Dark"

Understanding the role of the Host

Essentially, we’re all in the dark.

The job of the Club Host is to shine a spotlight onto specific topics, comments and ideas brought up in the Club to encourage discussion.

n.b. you can also think of the Host role like this:

  • Club participants are an orchestra
  • You are the Maestro or Conductor

TIP

"PLAY HOT POTATOES"

A tip to keep the conversation flowing.

Try this:

  1. Highlight the topic being discussed (one you think more participants might want to discuss i.e. family dynamics, new relationships etc).
  2. Tell the group that you want everyone to continue talking about the topic.
  3. Tell the group that you want everyone to have an opportunity to talk about it.
  4. Imagine throwing the topic around for discussion like a “hot potato”.
  5. Start by asking the most talkative participant to briefly share their thoughts on the topic.
